Senior Economist Karl Lundvall has presented Copenhagen Economics’ study on a common Nordic deposit-refund system to the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Copenhagen Economics was commissioned by the Nordic Waste Group within the Nordic Council of Ministers to analyse three possible solutions for a Nordic deposit-refund system and two variants of how large the group of containers subjected to a deposit should be.
The main conclusions of the study are that flows from the border trade are crucial for the feasibility of a common system. If containers that are currently entering Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland from Germany and Estonia were subjected to a deposit, much could be gained in terms of economic profits and environmental benefits. Conversely, a Nordic system where such cans are not included is not economically viable.
