Denmark is in the process of building the world’s best microscope, European Spallation Source (ESS), in Lund. Together with Sweden and Norway, Denmark has won the position of the microscope after a long and tough competition with other European countries such as Hungary and Spain.   The microscope cost around 11 billion DKK and is financed by the three countries in unison with the other EU countries. It is expected that the microscope will be a magnet for approximately 4.000 visiting researchers annually from around the world and that it could potentially become a huge growth catalyst for the entire Øresundsregion.   Partner Sigurd Næss-Schmidt says to TV 2 NEWS: “Copenhagen and the surrounding region are going to be the centre for a huge research area. In practice this means that you will see a huge opportunity to develop some of the traditional strongholds of Danish industry. This includes the pharmaceutical industry, the biotech industry and the materials development industry."   The comments is a follop up on an earlier report CE produced for ‘Forskningsministeriet’ (the Ministry of Research), analysing the future benefits to Denmark from the world’s best microscope.   For more information, please contact partner Sigurd Næss-Schmidt     You can see, hear and read more about the project here:
