Last week, the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (FCCA) approved the acquisition of Restel Hotellit Oy by Scandic Hotels Oy subject to conditions.
Prior to acquiring Restel, Scandic operated 27 hotels in Finland, while Restel had 43 hotels in its portfolio. Following the approval of the merger, Scandic will become the largest hotel operator in Finland. The role of Copenhagen Economics in the merger was to support Scandic during the merger investigation process by providing economic analysis and expert advice in the discussions with the FCCA.
As part of the conditions, Scandic was obliged to divest three hotels in mid-sized Finnish cities and to commit not to acquire four hotels currently being planned in Finland.
