In 2016, advanced economic and econometric methods started to play a more prominent role in the enforcement of competition law in Finland. This is demonstrated by two recent landmark decisions.
First, the Finnish Consumer and Competition Authority (FCCA) approved a large retail sector merger where investigations included, among others, extensive local market analysis.
Second, in the biggest court case of the wood procurement cartel, the Helsinki district court dismissed all damage claims, worth 160m euros. In its decision, court referred also to a lack of economic evidence of showing cartel effects.
