For this chapter on Sweden, Copenhagen Economics interviewed the Director-General of the Swedish Competition Authority (SCA) as well as 15 prominent Swedish competition law firms. Their feedback has been compiled in a chapter which investigates four of the most interesting merger and acquisition cases in Sweden over the past year.
Competition economics continues to play an important role in complex mergers, as economists are often engaged early on in complex merger processes. However, their expertise can also be called upon at a later stage in the case of unexpected Phase II investigations.
Several mergers involving Swedish companies have been brought to the attention of the Commission in the past 12 months, and economics-based evidence has played a prominent role in these investigations. Furthermore, there have been some in the legal profession who have noticed increased third-party activity in relation to merger investigations. Over the past year, the SCA has handled 74 merger filings, four of which progressed to Phase II assessments.
