New study: Car taxation can promote climate-friendly cars and safety while improving administrative feasibility

September 4, 2017

It is feasible to change the current value-based registration tax to a tax based on for example the car’s CO2 emissions.

Such a change would improve safety, promote climate-friendly features, make it more attractive to buy larger and more expensive cars, and greatly reduce administrative complexity.

We have assessed both a revenue-neutral implementation and an implementation reducing the taxes collected by DKK 4 billion. (before behavioural effects).
