New study: Reregulation of the Swedish OTC pharmaceuticals market has increased availability and lowered prices

March 29, 2017

The Swedish Competition Authority has recently published a report on the effects of the reregulation of the Swedish market for over the counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals. The report is partly based on a price comparison study by Copenhagen Economics, commissioned by the SCA, which concludes that customers purchasing their OTC on online pharmacies or in non-pharmacies seem to benefit from lower prices. However, there does not seem to be any effect on the prices in pharmacies, which are roughly 15% more expensive.

At the same time, online pharmacies (there is currently only one in Sweden) are the least expensive platform, and while a small market player, the competitive pressure they exert might contribute to increased service quality as tradi-tional pharmacies try to maintain their market share.
