The convergence of fixed and mobile communications is a relevant trend in the development of the EU system of communications in the long run. The complementarity of the two technologies is likely to be essential to progress further with 5G.
However, there are limits of different kinds – geographic, economic, technical and regulatory – on how much the existing fixed infrastructure can be repurposed.
