Super-microscopes in Lund can contribute substantially to the productivity of the Danish Capital Region

April 13, 2015

Copenhagen Economics has conducted a study for the Danish Capital Region and Vækstmotorprojektet (The Growth Motor Project) on the socio-economic effect of the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAX IV, currently under construction in Lund.

The Danish government contributes a relatively small, albeit significant in absolute terms, proportion of the construction costs of ESS. As the construction takes place in Lund, there is some question as to whether Denmark will enjoy a significant return-on-investment.

The main conclusions are

  • The Danish Capital Region will gain a substantial long-term economic boost from the facilities; not because of direct benefits to Danish suppliers, but be-cause of spill overs from the associated innovation activities.
  • We estimate that the facilities can contribute to the long-term productivity of the Danish Capital Region of about DKK 2 bio. per annum.
  • A comprehensive effort on the part of public and private stakeholders is crucial for the Danish return on investment from ESS.
