The European Parliament’s decision on recycling targets in line with Copenhagen Economics’ recommendations

April 13, 2015

On 17 June 2008, the European Parliament voted on recycling targets. The result of the vote follows closely the recommendations from a Copenhagen Economics impact assessment of the proposed recycling targets. The report was completed in May 2008 for the European Parliament.

Concluding the impact assessment, we supported the proposed 50% target on household and similar waste as well as 70% on construction and demolition waste. We did not, however, not find enough evidence to support the 70% target on industrial waste and targets on waste prevention. The result of the Parliament’s vote is in line with our recommendations.

The project work conducted by Copenhagen Economics was based on applied economic theory and comprised a series of expert interviews and testimonials, as well as extensive analysis of statistical data sources and their relevance for measuring the proposed targets.
