Yesterday, Managing Economist Anna Möller Boivie presented a paper about the role of postal networks in supporting e-commerce at the 28th conference on Postal and Delivery Economics, organised by Florence School of Regulation Communications and Media.
In the paper, we discuss and analyse the role of the postal delivery channel in supporting e-commerce stemming from the EU’s periphery regions. Based on our research, we find that the combination of postal infrastructures and e-commerce business models empowers merchants from the EU periphery to convey a significant economic contribution.
Amongst other things, we find that:
- Selling online is not just an urban areas phenomenon – about half of EU online sales stem from the EU’s periphery.
- In 2019, online revenues of more than EUR 40 billion generated by e-sellers from EU peripheral regions were shipped via postal infrastructures.
- This corresponds to over 110 thousand jobs in the EU’s peripheral regions supported by online retail activity via the postal channel.
