Bromma flygplats roll för konkurrensen på den svenska luftfartsmarknaden

In April 2014, a special investigator was tasked with analysing the consequence of a closure of Bromma Airport for e.g. regional growth, housing and the environment. As part of this task, Copenhagen Economics was asked to assess the competition impact of a closure of Bromma for the Swedish aviation market.

The analysis was based on interviews with market participants, data analysis and a review of the relevant economic literature. Among other things, a comparison of the capacity of Arlanda and Bromma and an analysis of airport slot availability was made to assess to what extent traffic at Bromma could be moved to Arlanda in the case of a closure.

The main conclusions of our study are

• In the short run, a closure of Bromma Airport would have a small negative effect on the competition on the aviation market.
• In the long run, the effect would still be negative but negligible as both airlines and airports will have had the time to adapt to the changed market conditions.
