Strategies for future postal operators: From letters to logistics

Since 2000 the letter volume in Denmark has decreased by 79%. As a response to the sharp decline, PostNord has announced a plan that will transform the company to a logistics- and freight company – that also delivers letters.

In this study, we conclude that it is common for postal operators around Europe to use their postal network for more than just delivering letters. We also conclude that it seems like a promising plan for PostNord to combine delivery of letters and parcels with logistics and freight.

Our conclusion is based on three observations:

• Demand for logistic services is increasing due to growing e-commerce
• There is a potential for great economies of scope
• PostNord is already active on the Danish logistics market and has a high market share in Sweden. That means that the necessary knowhow and resources are already available within the company.
