The aviation industry’s socio-economic impact on Denmark

More than 30 million passengers travel through the Danish airports each year. This activity creates substantial value for the Danish society and supports a large number of jobs.

Copenhagen Economics has analysed the economic value of air transport for Denmark in a future scenario of increased capacity as well as a future scenario involving a network rationalisation by the home network carrier, SAS. Furthermore, we analyse the economic value of the tendency towards more international traffic from the smaller Danish airports in Jutland.  

The main conclusions of our study are:

• Air transport creates economic value for Denmark. The aviation activity leads to jobs, the possibility to travel bring consumer welfare for passengers, and the connectivity the air transport gives rise to further creates substantial value for the Danish society through catalytic effects.
• The sector is undergoing change and the economic contribution is changing in the future as a result.
• Copenhagen Airport’s hub position means that Denmark is gifted with more international traffic than what the catchment area itself gives rise to. This hub position is of high value to Denmark.
