Clinical trials are conducted to ensure the safety and efficacy of new pharmaceutical products before they can be approved by regulatory authorities.

To shed light on the benefits of conducting clinical trials, Läkemedelsindustriföreningen, the trade association for the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden, asked Copenhagen Economics to quantify the value generated by clinical trials in Sweden.

The main conclusions of the study are:

Clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies deliver value to the Swedish society. On average, a clinical trial improves GDP by SEK 1m and the public budget by SEK 0,9m.

The study is commissioned by the Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Läkemedelsindustriföreningen).
