Chararcterisation of high-growth entrepreneurs

Characterisation of high-growth entrepreneurs

Original title: Undersøgelse af iværksættere

It is a well-established fact that entrepreneurs play an important role in competition and innovation in an economy. This dynamic is especially created by the most successful entrepreneurs – the so-called high-growth entrepreneurs. However, studies often examine all self-employed individuals, causing confusion around the optimal policy in the area.

In the light of these challenges, Copenhagen Economics was asked by the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs to analyse which characteristics is associated with high-growth entrepreneurship.

The main conclusions of our study

  • Spin-off entrepreneurs more often become high-growth entrepreneurs

  • A successful entrepreneur often has a higher education

  • Initial wealth appears associated with successful entrepreneurship

  • Previous leadership experience increases the likelihood of becoming a high-growth entrepreneur

The study was commissioned by the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs
