Economic impact of sensor-based glucose monitoring of diabetes in Denmark

Sensor-based glucose monitoring is a new and superior way for people with diabetes to monitor their blood glucose level. Today’s most common way for people to monitor their blood glucose level is the so-called finger pricking method.

Academic research suggests that the risk of complications, such as hypoglycaemia, is reduced when using sensor-based glucose monitoring. The lower risk reduces people with diabetes’ need for healthcare services, which has a positive impact on the public sector’s budgets.

Main conclusions of our study

  • The net cost of sensor-based glucose monitoring is much lower than its upfront cost

  • Sensor-based glucose monitoring reduces the risk of diabetes related complications such as hypoglycaemia

  • People with diabetes enjoy a higher degree of well-being when using sensor-based glucose monitoring and have fewer sick days
